Baby and Child Chiropractic in Ramsbottom

Baby and child chiropractic at ChiroCare uses light techniques adapted to age and size, for babies, children and teenagers. In babies, we do not treat colic, reflux, feeding, sleep or other medical problems, and your GP or health visitor is the right first call for those. Our GCC-registered chiropractors work from our clinic in Ramsbottom, Bury.

Gentle chiropractic for babies, children and teenagers

We see patients of all ages at ChiroCare, including babies, children and teenagers. Parents who search for a baby chiropractor or a paediatric chiropractor often want to know who will see their child. At ChiroCare, that is one of our GCC-registered chiropractors, and you can book with us directly. The phone consultation is free.

Babies' bones are softer than an adult's, so chiropractors use much gentler techniques. Chiropractic is a gentle treatment suitable for children and babies. Your chiropractor explains what they plan to do before they start.

Older children and teenagers get back pain and neck pain that are not from an injury, joint pain and minor sports injuries too, and we treat these with techniques adapted to their age and size.

What chiropractic does not treat in babies

You may have read that chiropractic can help with crying, colic or feeding. We do not offer chiropractic for any of the problems below, because there is no good evidence that it helps them:

  • colic or excessive crying
  • reflux, wind or constipation
  • feeding or latch problems
  • sleep problems
  • ear infections
  • a flat spot on the head, or a baby who always turns their head one way
  • development and milestones, such as rolling, crawling or walking

If you are worried about any of these, speak to your GP or health visitor first. They are the right people to assess these problems and arrange any further help.

If your baby is unwell and you need advice now, call NHS 111. In an emergency, call 999.

What happens at your child's first appointment

  1. We ask about your child's health, birth and medical history, and anything you have noticed.
  2. Your chiropractor carries out a gentle physical examination, adapted to your child's age.
  3. We explain what we have found in plain language and answer your questions. Nothing happens without your consent.
  4. If chiropractic is suitable, we explain the techniques we would use and agree a plan with you. If anything needs medical attention, we refer you to your GP, health visitor or paediatrician.

With your permission, we can share our findings with your GP or health visitor.

The techniques we use with babies and children

Techniques for babies use slight, sustained pressure, tailored to your baby. For older children and teenagers, your chiropractor uses gentle stretching and mobilisation, adapted to their age and size.

Your chiropractor tells you what each technique involves before using it, and you can ask us to stop at any point.

We can also show you comfortable positions for tummy time and carrying, and give older children simple exercises to do at home.

Children and teenagers

For older children, the reasons are often the same as for adults: back pain and neck pain that are not from an injury, joint pain and minor sports injuries. We assess how your child moves, and we use gentle hands-on techniques and advice where they are suitable.

A parent or guardian gives consent before we treat a child. If treatment is not suitable, we tell you and refer you on.

Who you will see

All our chiropractors are registered with the General Chiropractic Council, the UK's statutory regulator for chiropractors.

Dr Ammani Husna, Doctor of Chiropractic (not a medical doctor), has completed courses in paediatrics and pregnancy since qualifying. You can read more on her profile page. When you book, ask which chiropractor will see your child.

Cost, booking and referrals

We do not publish a separate price for babies' and children's appointments. Call 01706 391922 and we will tell you the cost before you book.

The phone consultation is free, so you can ask whether an appointment makes sense for your child before you commit. You do not need a referral from your GP or health visitor. You can book online or call us.

If you are expecting, read about chiropractic care during pregnancy.

Frequently asked questions

Is chiropractic safe for babies?

No treatment is completely free of risk. Techniques for babies use slight, sustained pressure, tailored to your baby. Your chiropractor takes a full history and examines your baby before anything starts, explains what they find and asks for your consent. If anything suggests your baby needs medical attention, we refer you to your GP or health visitor.

What happens when a chiropractor sees a baby?

At ChiroCare, a baby's appointment starts with questions about your baby's health, birth and medical history, then a gentle physical examination adapted to their age. We explain what we find and ask for your consent before any treatment. Techniques for babies use slight, sustained pressure. We can also show you comfortable positions for tummy time and carrying. If something needs medical attention, we refer you to your GP or health visitor.

Can a chiropractor help with colic or reflux?

No. There is no good evidence that chiropractic helps colic, reflux, ear infections or constipation, so we do not offer it for them. The same applies to feeding and sleep problems. If your baby has any of these symptoms, please speak to your GP or health visitor, who can assess your baby and arrange the right help.

Can a chiropractor help with a flat spot on my baby's head?

No. We do not offer treatment for head shape. If you are worried about a flat spot, speak to your health visitor or GP, who can advise on positioning and check whether anything else is needed.

How young can a baby see a chiropractor?

We see babies from the newborn stage onwards. Your baby does not need a chiropractic check just because they have been born, or because the birth was long or difficult. If you are unsure whether an appointment makes sense, call 01706 391922 for a free phone consultation first. For any medical worry, start with your GP or health visitor.

Does it hurt, and will I hear clicking?

Your chiropractor explains each technique before using it, and you can ask about anything, including sounds, before you agree. Techniques for babies are much gentler than techniques used with adults, and for older children they are adapted to their age and size. Nothing goes ahead without your consent, and you can ask us to stop at any point.

Should I see a chiropractor or a cranial osteopath for my baby?

Both professions see babies, and the same UK advertising rules on claims about babies apply to both. If you are choosing, ask each clinic what training the practitioner has in seeing babies, what they will do at the appointment, and what they will not claim to treat. If your worry is a medical one, start with your GP or health visitor.

Do I need a referral from my GP or health visitor?

No. You can book an appointment for your baby or child directly, online or by phone on 01706 391922, and the phone consultation is free. With your permission, we can share our findings with your GP or health visitor. If we find anything that needs medical attention, we will tell you and refer you to them.

Is chiropractic safe for children and teenagers?

Your chiropractor checks first whether treatment is suitable for your child, and adapts the techniques to their age, size and comfort. We take a full history and examine them before anything starts, and a parent or guardian gives consent. We see older children and teenagers for back pain and neck pain that are not from an injury, joint pain and minor sports injuries. If treatment is not suitable, we tell you and refer you on.
